Abstract

819,376. Electromagnetic switches. COLNE SWITCHGEAR (K. & W.) Ltd. Oct. 21, 1957 [Oct. 20, 1956], No. 32023/56. Class 38 (5). A time-lag overload device has separate adjustment for armature position in relation to the operating coil, and for a dashpot in relation to a piston attached to the armature. A magnetic casing B encloses the coil C and supports a non-magnetic member D by means of a screw D<SP>2</SP> and adjusting nut D<SP>3</SP> with compression spring D<SP>4</SP>. A tubular part D<SP>1</SP> extends into the core and encloses the armature A which has an extension rod A<SP>1</SP> and collar A<SP>2</SP> with a washer A<SP>3</SP> movable between the collar A<SP>2</SP> and a circlip A4. When the armature is attracted the collar A<SP>2</SP> and washer A<SP>3</SP> form a piston in the smallerdiameter part of the dashpot H screwed into the member D. The current setting is adjusted by means of the nut D<SP>3</SP> moving the member D and with it the armature A in relation to the coil C. The time-lag is adjusted by screwing the dashpot H into or out of the member D and thereby altering the amount of travel of the washer in the smaller-diameter part of the dashpot. The armature, when attracted, strikes a pin E which opens spring-biased contacts F<SP>1</SP>. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), three units are described having calibrated scales for current and time-lag settings form a three-phase device with their pins E acting on a common pivoted plate which operates tripping contacts and has a latch to retain it in the operated position.
