Abstract

635,672. Inertia switches. WILKINSON SWORD CO., Ltd., GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., HANSARD, D. A., and BENNETT, N. G. March 5, 1948, Nos. 6876 and 19275. [Class 38 (v)] An impact-operated device for controlling switches, automatic fire preventing appliances &c. in craft and vehicles, comprises a slug 8 slidable in a tube 9 mounted in a fixture 10. A bow-spring 18 resting on the slug is supported at its ends by leaf - springs 13 secured to opposite sides of the fixture 10. Should the craft be decelerated above a predetermined amount, slug 8 overcomes spring 18 which snaps over and bridges contacts in the circuit controlled and mounted on a terminal block 20 forming a closure for a container 19 surrounding fixture 10. A spring-urged resetting knob 29 is mounted in the block 20. The free length of the springs 13 is adjustable to vary the setting at which the switch will operate. The slug is hollowed out at one end and provided with a secondary slug 31 having limited sliding movement whereby vibrations tending to cause inadvertent operation are damped out. According to the first Provisional Specification, the leaf-springs may be adjusted by a cam, and container 19 may be pressurized or filled with damping fluid. The slug may also be locked in the inoperative position by mechanical or electrical means during the firing of guns on military craft.
