Abstract

684,444. Centrifugal switches. GARRATT CORPORATION. Dec. 27, 1950 [Dec. 31, 1949], No. 31373/50. Class 38 (v) [Also in Groups XXIV, XXVI and XXIX] A centrifugally-actuated snap-action switch comprises a rotatable support, a snap-acting arm pivoted to the support to one side of the support axis and extending across said axis, and carrying a weight at its free end, two spaced stops limiting movement of the arm longitudinally of the axis, and yielding means connected to the arm and the support and applying a force biasing the arm towards one of the stops, the axis making an angle of less than 90 degrees with a line passing through the pivot of the arm and the combined centre of gravity of the arm and the weight. The support 33 is attached to a shaft 22 rotated through gears 23, 26 by the controlled apparatus, and comprises a trifurcated blade spring, the central tension arm 40 of which is mounted on a screw 42 and the outer limbs 51 of which engage in notches 53 in a part 48 of the support 33. The arm 40 is normally urged by the springs 51 against a stop 47 on the support 33 and carries the weight 55. At a predetermined speed, the centrifugal force of the weight just overbalances the force of springs 51 and the arm 40 snaps clockwise until it abuts a stop 46, which is preferably placed so that the blade spring cannot move over-centre, an insulating plunger 71 being pushed to the left to close switch contacts 60, 61, during the snap movement. The contacts re-open when the speed falls below a certain minimum value, the springs 51 restoring the arm 40 with a snap action. The predetermined speed may be adjusted by moving screw 42 in or out to alter the pivot of arm 40, and/or by shifting springs 51 from one pair of notches 53 to another. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a coil spring is arranged between the casing 17 and an extension of the blade 59 carrying the contact 61, the stress on the spring being adjustable by a screw to vary the predetermined speed.
