Abstract
499,874. Thermal switches. MARKUS, R., and SMITH, F. K. (Kieback, E., and Peter, P.) July 21, 1937, No. 20232. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch of the type with the contacts enclosed in a vacuum chamber, one of the contacts being mounted on a lever passing through the end of the chamber which is made elastic to serve as a fulcrum the chamber is pivoted so that a control means, such as heat-responsive element, first tilts the chamber without altering the relation of the contacts and then, when the tilting movement has been checked by a stop, opens or closes the circuit. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement controlled by a tube 24 of a high coefficient of expansion enclosing a non-expansive rod 25 carrying a stirrup 26 and an adjustable knife-edge 23 on to which a member 22 attached to the lever 19 is pressed by a spring 29. The lever 19 passes through the sheet metal cover 9 of the chamber 8. The cover 9 is formed with arcuate corrugations 9<1> so as to allow the arm to move in the plane of the paper. The chamber 8 is pivoted about its centre of gravity and to it is attached an arm 15 which abuts against an adjustable stop 13. The lever 19 carries a contact member 20 cooperating with a contact member 17 secured in the other end of the chamber, a second member 18 serving either as another contact or merely as a stop. The spring 29 may be replaced by a bladespring. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement in which the end 42 of the chamber through which the lever 39 carrying the contact 40 passes is flat and is corrugated in the manner shown in Fig. 5. The lever 39 is furnished with an insulating portion 41 pressed by a, spring 54 against an adjustable point 52 carried by the operating-rod 53. When the contacts are nearly closed a magnet 51 bends the lever slightly to accelerate closing.
