Abstract
306,574. Whiffin, W. W. Nov. 18, 1927. Dashpots, applications of.- A retarding device for switches, gas cocks, &c. causing them to be automatically switched off, e.g. a certain time after they have been switched on by hand, comprises a piston 4 which is slowly moved upwards in a cylinder 3 by a spring 7 till the partial vacuum in the cylinder is suddenly broken down and the piston moves rapidly upwards to actuate the switch or cock. The rate of movement of the piston is controlled by the entry of air into the cylinder 3 by an adjustable aperture 9 and the sudden breaking of the vacuum is caused by the piston reaching the upper end of the cylinder. In modifications, other means of breaking the vacuum, such as a hole or an enlarged cylinder bore, are adopted. A non-return valve may also be incorporated in the cylinder and the device may be oil-controlled. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 204,561 and 263,301, [both in Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.].
