Abstract

775,435. Solenoid-operated valves. WELT, B. P., MASLOW, M., and KREITCHMAN, M. A. Aug. 3, 1954, No. 22470/54. Class 135. A solenoid-operated valve comprises a valve body 26, Fig. 1, having an inlet passage 31 and an aligned outlet passage 31a mounting a seat nipple 25 engageable with a sealing member 24 loosely mounted in an elongated recess 45 in a transverse bore 22 of a plunger 20. Inlet pressure acts on the rear face of the member 24 to urge it into engagement with the seat. On the energization of a solenoid 10, the plunger 20 moves upwardly against a spring 19 to open the valve, the plunger moving initially with lostmotion with respect to the sealing member to strike the latter and break the seal between the member 24 and the seat 25. In a modification, two outlet passages 32,.33, Fig. 5, are provided. In the upward position of the plunger 39, the inlet passage 43 communicates with the passage 32 and in the downward position thereof with the passage 33. In a further modification, a seat nipple is fitted in each of the passages 31, 31a, and the sealing member 24 carried by an axially disposed lug of the plunger is engageable with either nipple depending upon the direction of flow through the valve.
