Abstract

775,167. Oil filters. JAY, K. W. Sept. 6, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 25524/55. Class 46. An oil, &c. filter removable from its oil line without draining the oil, &c. system comprises a filter core 15 supported by end pieces 13; 14 and surrounded by a casing 12 slidable over the end pieces each of which houses a self-closing valve 21, 35 held open by the core when in its operative position, one valve 21 opening the inlet passage 24 into the interior of the core. A chamber 20 in the end piece 13 houses the inlet valve 21 and its closing spring 22 and a radial flange 17 and skirt 18 enclose a spring 51 which urges the core against a boss 50 on the other valve 35, this valve having legs 36 passing through the end piece 14 and engaged by a flange on the outer casing 12 to hold the valve off its seat 39 against the action of a tension spring 37. A wing nut 27 clamps the end piece 14 to the casing 12. At its inlet end the core has a perforated plate 43 carrying a stem 44 adapted to engage the inlet valve and open it as the core is placed in position. Excessive pressure e.g. due to clogging of the filter opens a relief valve 49. In a modification, the two valves are similar, the skirt 18 is omitted and the core and casing are removable sideways from the oil line.
