Abstract
773,988. High-frequency discharge apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 12, 1955 [April 22, 1954], No. 11598/54. Class 39(1). Apparatus in which a high frequency field is set up contains within the field a discharge tube in which the anode is large compared with the cathode, although subtending an angle of substantially less than 360 degrees ; the disposition is such that the h.f. field becomes progressively weaker from cathode to anode, so that it is too weak to affect electrons when the field is reversed. As shown, the tube is a cylindrical diode, having a filamentary cathode 4 and an arcuate anode 5, placed at the centre of a rectangular waveguide 1 excited to set up a field of H10 type. The tube leads 9, 10 are bent at right angles to the electric field to support the tube in the guide. Suitable dimensions are given. Such an arrangement is convenient for measuring the power propagated along the guide, by measuring the anode potential, and also for signal detection, mixing, or modulation. Fig. 2 (not shown) of the Provisional Specification has a differently shaped diode.
