Abstract
773,527. Waveguide couplers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1954 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 27855/53. Class 40 (8). An arrangement for coupling a rectangular waveguide W to auxiliary guide, e.g. a circular guide, comprises two or more similar holes A, B, &c., spaced apart along the centre-line of the broad face of the rectangular guide for obtaining a longitudinal component of current, and a longitudinal slot C offset from the centre line and arranged symmetrically with respect to the holes so as to obtain a transverse component of current in time quadrature with the longitudinal component. In the embodiment shown the distance l between the holes AB is chosen to give a substantially constant longitudinal current component over the working range. The length l1 of the slot C is then chosen to give a transverse current characteristic which coincides as nearly as possible with the longitudinal current characteristic over the working range. This may be done by choosing the length of the slot so that it is resonant at about half the working wavelength. The Specification contains a brief mathematical discussion of the invention.
