771,427. Eddy current speedometers. FOXBORO CO. Aug. 16, 1955 [Aug. 31, 1954], No. 23633/55. Class 106 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] An eddy current speedometer comprising a rotatable magnet member 22 and a drag member 45 has one of these members, as shown the magnet member 22, secured to a shaft 21 of high temperature coefficient of expansion so that the airgap between the members varies with temperature changes in the shaft, means being promoted for guiding a stream of air around the drag member and along the shaft so that the eddy current temperature variations are applied to the shaft. The stream of air is preferably provided from the waste vent 65 of a pneumatic transmitter (see Group XXIX), giving a remote indication of the speed and passes down longitudinal slots 31 in the shaft 21 to an exhaust orifice 32, 33. The shaft 21 is a piston fit in a sleeve 20 having a zero temperature coefficient of expansion and is fixed to the sleeve by a pin 30 at the end remote from the magnet 22, the sleeve 20 being supported in bearings 23, 24 in the housing 10. The drag member 45 consists preferably of copper with 3.8 to 4 per cent manganese. A magnetic flux guide ring 43 is provided.
