Abstract

646,158. Airspeed indicators. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22862. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1946. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XX] Separate indications of wind speed and direction are signalled to an indicator, having two concentric pointers, by a rotatable hollow member housing a pressure-sensitive device. The housing 18 is mounted on the rotor shaft 20 of a Selsyn transmitter and moved into line with the wind-stream by a tail-vane 19. The transmitter is connected in known manner to a similar receiver mounted in the indicator case, Fig. 2 (not shown), and having a hollow shaft 62 carrying an aeroplane-shaped pointer 64. A pitot-tube 38 in the nose of the housing is connected to a bellows 39 to move an energized coil 42 which induces two E.M.Fs. 180 degrees out-of-phase in the oppositely wound stator coils 48, 49. These voltages are applied to a three-phase Selsyn stator 71 in the rear of the indicator housing, and the E.M.F. developed in the rotor coil 70 is fed through an amplifier 15 to one coil 74 of a two-phase induction motor 69 having its other coil 73 permanently energized, whereby the motor 69 drives the rotor 70, through suitable gearing 76, to a nullpick-up position. The rotor shaft 70 extends through the hollow direction-indicating shaft to a pointer 77.
