Abstract
886,880. Speedometers. KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1958 [Oct. 16, 1957], No. 26284/58. Class 106 (3). A differential tachometer comprises a tachometer electric motor having a rotor 13 and a stator 14, one of which (A) is driven by a synchronous electric motor 12, the other (B) being driven in the opposite direction at a speed proportional to the speed of a rotating member 23, the component B driving a tachometer indicating means 18, which may be of the magnet-and-eddy current-disc type, in response to the difference in speed between the rotor 13 and stator 14. The arrangement is said to be particularly suitable for use with a jet engine, in which application the synchronous motor 12 would be driven at a speed proportional to full engine speed. At this speed the percentage error of the instrument is at a minimum (Fig. 3, not shown). The indicator dial is arranged so that the pointer assumes the same angular position whether the synchronous motor 12 is running or not.
