840,996. Speedometers. SOC. S.T.E.B. May 22, 1958 [May 23, 1957], No. 16507/58. Class 106 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] The torque on the eddy-current drum 9 of a tachometer is adjusted by modifying the flux across the working air-gap by means of an axially adjustable shunt 5. The poles rotate with their exciting magnet 3 on shaft 1, and consist of a smooth cylindrical inner pole 8 and a ring of tapered outer poles 10 spaced by slots 14. The shunt 5 may be adjustably mounted by a screw-thread in a fixed member 6 or it may be threaded on to the poles 10. The eddycurrent drum may be made of a resistive alloy having a low-temperature coefficient, e.g. constantan or manganin.
