Abstract

760,838. Electric tachometers. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. April 7, 1955 [April 9, 1954], No. 10582/54. Class 40 (1). An electric tachometer comprises a constant field D.C. generator driven by a shaft the speed of which is to be measured, with a current indicator in series with its armature and at least one circuit comprising a rectifier and resistor in series so connected that the calibration of the indicator differs according to the direction of shaft rotation. In Fig. 2 parallel circuits comprising resistors 8 and 11 of different values in series with oppositely poled dry plate rectifiers 7, 10 respectively are connected in series with coil 5 of a moving-coil instrument across the brushes 2, 3 of a generator 1 with permanent magnet excitation. In a modification one of the rectifiers is omitted and a further resistor added in series with the instrument coil.
