Convention date, May 27, 1933. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] Apparatus for measuring the torsional oscillations of rotating bodies and for giving an alarm when necessary comprises an armature with coils 2 connected to, and therefore taking part in the oscillations of, the shaft, and a field magnet 3 rotatably mounted on the armature shaft 1a and driven by light springs 4 so that it rotates at the same mean speed as the shaft, but is not subject to the oscillations. The alternating current generated in the armature is transmitted by way of a slip ring 7 or a step-up transformer to a measuring instrument, and the armature and poles are so arranged that the value of the alternating current generated is an indication of the amplitude of oscillation. An alarm device in the circuit may be operated when a predetermined amplitude of oscillation is exceeded. A choke coil may be arranged in the alternating current circuit to provide an inductive resistance.
