Abstract

A disinfectant which may be used in vapour spray, atomized or aerosol form, contains a mixture of two or more dihydric aliphatic alcohols having five or more carbon atoms in the molecule and bearing the second hydroxyl group in the 3-position to a primary hydroxyl group and may be alkyl substituted in the 2-position. The activity of the mixture can be increased by adding at least one glycol with less than 5 carbon atoms in the molecule, a polyglycol, an ether alcohol of a glycol, and/or an ether alcohol of a polyglycol, e.g. ethylene glycol di- and tri-ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and the monoethyl ether of di- and tri-ethylene glycol. The composition may contain one or more solvents, e.g. water, together with non-ionic emulsifiers e.g. aliphatic polyglycol esters. Examples of aliphatic di-hydric alcohols are pentanediol-1.3, hexanediol-1.3, heptane-diol-1.3, 2-methyl-pentane-diol, 2-ethyl-pentane-diol, 2.2.dimethyl-pentene-diol, 2-methyl-hexane-diol, 2-ethyl-hexane-diol, 2.2.dimethyl-hexane-diol, 2.2.4.tri-methyl-pentane-diol, 2.2-diethyl-pentane-diol, 2.2-diethyl-hexane-diol, 2.2.diethyl.4. methyl-pentane-diol, 2-methyl-2-propyl-pentane-diol, 2-methyl-2-propyl hexane-diol, 2.4.diemthyl-2-propyl-pentane-diol-2-ethyl-butane-diol.
