Class 100(2) A forme inking or damping roller 4 is held in contact both with a vibrating supply roller 5 and with a printing cylinder 2 by elements (e.g. including a yielding presser 8, Fig. 5, having a plane operative surface 12 at right angles to the mean direction of movement of the forme roller towards the supply roller and printing cylinder), the distance between the axes of the forme roller and printing cylinder being increased during passage of the cylinder gap 3, Fig. 3, by control elements (e.g. including a lifting arm 16, Fig. 6) which are positively operated by the printing machine in synchronism with the working cycle. The shafts 15 of the lifting arms 16 shown are pivoted in the machine frame and have two-armed levers 17, Fig. 3, at their other ends, one arm being lightly spring-loaded at 20 to keep the arm 16 in contact with a roller bearing 7 on the forme roller shaft whereby the lever 17 forms an accurate external indicator of forme roller movement; the other arm carries an adjustable screw 19 against the tip of which an abutment 27 on a control lever 21 (free on the shaft 15) is pressed as a roller 22 on the control lever rides up the rise 26 (corresponding to the cylinder gap 3) of a cam 25 on the printing cylinder shaft 30 to lift the forme rollers 4 over the gap and lower them again smoothly; a spring 24 keeps the roller 22 in contact with the cam. The pivoted pressers 8, 9, Fig. 5, are spring-loaded at 11 and engage separate roller bearings 6 adjacent the bearings 7 on the forme roller shafts; stops 13, 14 limit their movement when the forme rollers are removed. Further rollers 23, adjacent the rollers 22, may be provided on the control levers 21 for engagement by a manual tripping lever 28 on a shaft 29.
