Abstract
767,637. Auxiliary power installations on aircraft. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 958/55. Class 4. [Also in Groups X and XIII] A ram air turbine 5 exposed to the air stream of an aircraft drives a pump 10 supplying hydraulic fluid driving a motor 12 coupled to a fan 27 which draws air or other gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen from a closed compartment 1 in the aircraft and returns it to that compartment through a duct 30, 31 in which the fan is located. The duct contains a cooler 32 through which coolant air from the turbine flows. The fluid driving the motor 12 returns to the pump through a pressurized sump 15 and a heat exchanger 20 cooled by air from the turbine. The motor also drives an electric generator 25 supplying electric equipment 2 in the compartment 1. The electric generator may be of the induction type so that it can act as an electric motor to drive the fan 27 when the aircraft is on the ground. The motor 12 has an integral speed control which limits its speed, and a byepass with a pressure relief valve 13.
