Abstract
695,016. Screw fans; gas turbine plant. GARRETT CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1950 [Sept. 17, 1949], No. 4275/50. Classes 110(i) and 110(iii) A turbine-driven air circulating unit comprises a housing enclosing a turbine rotor and a fan impeller connected by a driving shaft; a bearing structure for the shaft; sealing means between the rotor and the bearing structure having flow spaces for air from the housing exterior, the spaces connecting with cooling passages in the bearing structure; and means for moving air through the spaces and passages. The temperature drop which occurs due to expansion of the driving air in an air turbine is used to cool ambient air which enters through radial channels 70, Fig. 1, formed in a flange 62 and passes over the rear surfaces of the nozzle member 83 and rotor 33 of the turbine. The cooled air then flows by way of ports 74 to cooling passages 97 in a bearing support 14, and enters the inlet of a fan 38 through ports 98. The main supply of air to the fan 38 is through an inlet connection 51. Lubricating oil is conveyed from a chamber 12 to the surface of the shaft 27 by means of wicks 92a, 92b which, as shown in Fig. 3, are threaded through passages 93a, 93b in the bearing support 14. The high shaft speed forms the oil into a fine mist which is drawn by fans 32, 36 through bearings 24. 26. The oil returns by way of passages 96, 99, being cooled in transit by the cooling air flowing through passages 97. Oil can drain back to the chamber 12 through the lowermost passages 99 and a filter 100. Specification 695,090 is referred to.
