Abstract

589,706. Stuffing-boxes. ESCHER WYSS MASCHINENFABRIKEN AKT.-GES. March 27, 1945, No. 7699. Convention date, March 28, 1944. [Class 122 (v)] A shaft gland 4 for steam and gas turbines is cooled by part of the working medium which is extracted at the point 6 from a space 19 lying behind the first expansion stage 1, looking in the direction of flow, then passed through a cooling device 8 in a vaporous state to a point 11, lying between the ends of the gland 4, from whence some of the working medium is discharged to a point 16 and so to a point behind the second guide-wheel 3. The working medium serving to cool the gland is derived from a point lying behind a regulating device which determines the amount of working fluid passing through the turbine.
