Abstract
698,898. Turbines. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE. Jan. 29, 1951 [Feb. 4, 1950], No. 2168/51. Class 110(iii) To compensate for the deformation caused by unequal heat distribution in the rotor and casing of an axial flow turbine, the turbine is provided with a device supplied with a flow of vaporous medium which is the same as the working medium of the turbine in such a manner that the variations in the clearances caused by the deformation of the rotor and casing serve to compensate automatically or cause to operate means for automatically compensating the deformation. In Fig. 1, a compensating tube 1 is mounted in the turbine casing 2 so that its end is within a distance of 0.5 to 1.0 mms. from the surface of the rotor 3. Steam supplied from a pipe 5 passes through an orifice 6, pipe I and a gap fsp into the turbine casing. The area fd of the orifice 6 is preferably the same as that of the gap fsp so that the pressure px in the tube 1 is then dependent upon the area of the gap fsp. As shown in Fig. 3, the pressure variation in the tube 1 can be used to operate a valve 12 through a regulator 11 or the compensating device itself can be used for this purpose. In the latter case, cooling fluid passes through the tube 1 and the amount will be controlled by variations of the size of the gap fsp. Modifications in which the compensating tube is used to operate an electrical heating device and in -which compensating tubes are mounted on diametrically opposite sides. of the turbine casing are described.
