Abstract
716,149. Gas turbine plant. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 28, 1952 [May 15, 1951], No. 10574/52. Class 110(3) A turbine wheel 16 encloses a chamber 42 adapted to contain cooling fluid and communicating with closed passages 40 in the blades 38 and with a heat exchanger or condenser 46 formed with and around the turbine shaft 22 at a location remote from the wheel and subject to a flow of cooling gases during operation. Communication with the condenser is by way of axial passages 56, 66 in the shaft. A supercharger impeller 24 is arranged on the shaft and has an inlet 28 surrounding the condenser. Tubes 68 with nozzles 72 are mounted in the chamber 42 in the ends of the passages 66. The turbine is fed through nozzle blades 37 and heat shields 34 are arranged between the turbine and the compressor. The shaft is mounted in a bearing 12. The cooling medium may be distilled water, sulphur, mercury, phosphorous or sodium.
