Abstract

615,680. Gas turbine plant. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. LAWRENCE, P. H., and BEAUCHAMP, G. H. June 18, 1946, No. 18224. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] Combustion products from a circular serles of inclined combustion chambers 28 are reversed in direction in pipes 46 and pass through a two-stage turbine 23, 26. The exhaust gases pass outwards through heatexchangers 19 in which compressed-air from a centrifugal compressor 7 passes inwards on its way to the combustion chambers. The arrangement provides that the low-pressure rotor 26 of the turbine is adjacent to the main bearing 4. The shaft 1 is supported by main bearings 3, 4 and an intermediate bearing 6 carried by a tubular casing 38. Cooling air is drawn through the space between the casing 38 and a cylinder 29 by a fan 31 adjacent the turbine rotor. Oil is fed to the bearings through pipes 30. The heat-exchangers which are located between the combustion chambers are of the contra-flow kind.
