Abstract
1,021,688. Refrigerating. ADOLPH SAURER Ltd. April 29, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 16673/63. Heading F4H. Air withdrawn from an enclosure 1 through a line 13 is coated in an expansion turbine 2 and then supplied to one pass 6 of a heat exchanger 7 where it cools air flowing through the second pass 5 of the heat exchanger and a line 11 to the enclosure. Turbine 2 drives an impeller 4 which supplies atmospheric air to pass 5, and air from pass 6 is withdrawn by a compressor 8. When the system is installed in an aircraft, the compressor 8 may form part of a gasturbine installations 18 and the above-described cooling cycle is performed when the main aircraft propulsion unit is inoperative. In flight operation valves 19 and 20 are opened and valves 21 and 22 are switched to the positions illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), the arrangement then being such that compressed air from the main power unit passes through valve 20, pass 5 of heat exchanger, valve 22 and turbine 2 to the enclosure. The air is then discharged to atmosphere via valve 21, pass 6 and valve 19. In this cycle impeller 4 circulates air through a heat exchanger 26 to cool the incoming compressed air.
