Abstract

966, 743. Nuclear power plant. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Jan. 10, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1537/60. Heading G6C. In a water-cooled nuclear reactor power plant, the electric motor driving the cooling water pump is itself cooled by an auxiliary flow of water from the main reactor circuit. The motor and pump are separated by a labyrinth gland through which water flows from the motor into the pump suction side to prevent the flow of untreated coolant into the motor. As shown, the reactor 4 is cooled by water circulated round circuit 2 by pump 1 driven by motor 12. The latter is cooled by water drawn from the high pressure side of 1 at 3 and returned to the suction side at 19. 12 is separated from the pump impeller by a gland 13 and high pressure water from 12 passes through the gland to the space 16 which is connected to pump suction by duct 15. The motor coolant intake, 18, 18A, 18B includes heat exchangers 6, 7, the ion exchange column 8 and filter 9. The pressure responsive valve 11 opens to permit coolant flow through the motor should 8, 9 become choked.
