767,609. Convertible Cycles. KREIDLER, A. June 25, 1954 [June 26, 1953], No. 18644/54. Class 136(3). In a gear for an engine-assisted -cycle to enable it to function optionally as or to be converted from an engine-assisted pedal cycle to a light motor cycle, the engine output shaft 12 is provided, in addition to the normal change-speed gear wheels 14, 15 with two further gear wheels 13, 23 through which the output shaft can be rotated, and the casing is constructed to receive in the same bearings 3, 4 either the shaft 17 of a kick-starter mechanism adapted to engage and drive the gear wheel 23 or a pedal crankshaft 5 adapted to be connected by a spur gear train 6, 7, 9-11 including a free wheel 7 to the gear wheel 13. The gear wheel 23 comprises a toothed annulus rotatably mounted on the hub 15<SP>1</SP> of the gear wheel 15. On its inner periphery the gear wheel 23 has notches 23<SP>1</SP> in which a spring-loaded pawl 24 may engage. The pawl is fitted in a recess in the hub 15<SP>1</SP>. The annulus 23 is rotated by a toothed quadrant 19 fixed on the kick-starter shaft 17 when angular movement is imparted to the shaft through the kick-starter 25. The quadrant 19 is fixed to a sleeve 18 which surrounds the shaft 17. A torsion spring 20 engages at one end in a bore in the quadrant 19 and at the other end in a recess in the housing 1. A locking member 22 is held by means of a bolt 21 in the bearing 8 from which the transmission shaft 9, Fig. 1, has been removed. The member 22 surrounds the shaft 17 and has a lug 22<SP>1</SP> which forms a stop for a projection 18<SP>1</SP> of the sleeve 18. The shaft 17 carries foot rests each consisting of a sleeve 27 provided with a hard rubber sleeve 30 which extends beyond the shaft end. The sleeves 30 provide a buffer to reduce damage to the gear and casing if the cycle falls to the ground.
