Abstract

383,923. Motor-cycles. HULT, C. A., 160, Valhallavõgen, Stockholm. July 8, 1932, No. 19386. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (v).] A motor - cycle comprises a power unit mounted to rock about the axis of one of the wheels of the cycle, and resiliently constrained against rocking movement, and a resilient transmission system for transmitting power from the unit to the cycle wheel. A gear wheel of the transmission system may be movable into and out of mesh with a gear wheel on the wheel hub to effect connection and disconnection of the drive, and two or more such movable gear wheels may be provided to give a variable gear ratio. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the motor 2 is carried by a sleeve 3 so as to oscillate about an extension of the wheel axle 4, under the control of a spring 5. The crank shaft is provided with a pinion 6 engaging a spur ring 7 resiliently connected to a disc on the wheel hub through arcuatelyarranged coil springs fitted between abutments. The spring 5 may be enclosed in a rigid sleeve, and its connections to the motor and frame are adapted to screw adjustably into the spring coils. Fig. 7 shows a variable-gear transmission comprising a gear casing 21 pivotally mounted at its centre on a bearing bush projecting from the side of the crank case of the motor. The crank-shaft pinion 6 meshes with pinions 26 carrying pinions 27, 28 of different diameters, adapted to be brought alternatively, by pivotal movement of the casing 21, into engagement with a spur ring 7 connected to the cycle wheel through a resilient drive. The pivotal movement of the casing 21 is effected by means of a rod 40, fitted with a control knob 42, and provided with a spring-pressed bolt adapted to engage one of three holes 34, 35, 36, the bolt being actuated through an eccentric 39 by rotating the rod 40. The movable gear wheels in the casing 21 are lubricated, when in the operative position, through passages adapted to register with holes in the crank case.
