Abstract

781,973. One-way brakes. DINSDALE, W. E., and SMITH, E. April 19, 1955 [Jan. 26, 1954], No. 2277/54. Class 103 (1). A one-way braking mechanism for preventing road vehicles from running back on hills or moving in a direction other than that intended comprises a unit for fitting on to the main power transmission shafting 7, 7, which includes a pair of one-way spragging devices 1 such as are shown in Fig. 2, having balls or rollers 6 which lock on to a stationary ring 3, such devices being arranged to act against rotation of the transmission shaft 7 in different directions and in coaxial disposition therewith. One or other of the spragging devices is brought into operation by movement of the internally splined sleeve 8, 9 by rods 12, linked to the gear lever, so as to engage with dogs or teeth 10. The unit is preferably mounted within the gear box walls towards the rear thereof.
