Abstract

413,039. Variable-speed gearing ; brakes. BERLIN, D. W., 1A, Tottvõgen, Rasunda, Sweden. Jan. 31, 1933, No. 3033. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 7, 1934.] [Class 80 (ii).] In devices in which masses connected to a driving shaft are mounted on eccentrics on a sleeve connected by one-way driving devices to the driven shaft, means are provided for imparting the backward impulses in a forward direction to the driven shaft. These means comprise spur gearing 10, 11, 13. The wheel 11 is spring-mounted either in the frame of the box or in a casing 16 which acts also as a flyweight. The direct torque of the sleeve 5 derived from a driving shaft 1 and flywheel 2 is imparted through a roller ratchet 14. The reverse torque is changed in direction by the wheel 11 and is imparted by the wheel 13, sleeve 9, and roller ratchet 14<1>. Reverse rotation of the casing is prevented by a brake band 17. Another arrangement is shown in Fig. 4. Here a flange 27 is provided for braking. Wedges 28, Fig. 5, lock the flange during gearing for forward running and wedges 29 during backward running. The wedges are mounted in a box 31 and are operated by a lever 30 pivoted at 30. Anti-friction rollers 32 are fitted to the wedges 28. The ratchets may be concentrically arranged, one such construction being shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The sleeve 5 has an extension 18 on the inside of which are the rollers 18 of the forward ratchet, and on the outside, the rollers 20 of the other ratchet. There are three spur wheels 11. The holders 41, 42 of the rollers are relatively movable over a common ball bearing 48 and rotate in known manner with the shaft 7 and sleeve 20 respectively. The motion is reversed by moving a lever 43 to the left, whereupon, by means of any suitable mechanism, the holders 41, 42 rotate slightly in opposite directions so that the rollers 18, 20 are brought to the opposite position of the checking surfaces. The arrangement of the flats and rollers forming the ratchets is shown in Fig. 7. Flats 42 are formed on the inside of the sleeve 20 and flats 41<ac> on the periphery of the shaft 7.
