Abstract

766,153. Cathode materials: fluorescent discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 11, 1953 [Nov. 22, 1952], No. 31207/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). A gaseous electric discharge device, particularly a fluorescent lamp, has electrodes which are provided with an electron emissive coating material comprising at least one alkaline earth metal oxide and from 0À9 to less than 1 per cent., preferably 0À925 per cent., by weight of commercial zirconium dioxide, of the total weight of all the oxides. The commercial zirconium dioxide used includes approximately 1À5 to 5 per cent. of hafnium dioxide as an impurity. In preparing the emissive material a mixture, by weight of about 31 per cent. strontium carbonate, about 56 per cent. barium carbonate and about 13 per cent. calcium carbonate can be used. Each electrode can be wound into a minor coil which can be wound into a major coil to form a coiledcoil, the electron emissive material filling the space within the minor coil only. The electrodes can be used in a discharge lamp, the envelope of which is coated on its inner surface with fluorescent material and which is provided with an inert gas such as argon at a pressure of about 3 mms. of mercury together with a small quantity of mercury. The lamp is ordinarily operated at a mercury vapour pressure of between 1 and 20 microns. Specification 655,123 is referred to.
