Abstract
687,617. Cathode materials. LUMALAMPAN AKTIEBOLAG. Feb. 2, 1951, No. 2659/51. Class 39(i) The electrode for a low pressure discharge tube comprises a metal base having a coating which consists of the oxides of calcium, thorium and zirconium and at least one of the oxides of barium and strontium, the quantity of zirconium oxide being less than that of the oxide of calcium or thorium. The proportions of the oxides of calcium, thorium and zirconium may be 4.5-5, 5-8 and 0.8-1 parts by weight respectively, and of the combined oxides of barium and strontium 1.4-11 parts but not more than 8.5 of barium oxide or 3.5 of strontium oxide. In the absence of strontium oxide there should be at least 7 parts of barium oxide, or in the absence of barium oxide at least 1.4 parts of strontium oxide. Specified proportions of the carbonate may be used. The coating may be inserted in a tungsten spiral so that it fills the spaces between the windings and the spiral may be wound to form a double or triple wound electrode used in a rectifier having argon at 4.5 mms. or in a fluorescent discharge lamp having argon at 4 mms.
