[Also in Group XXIV] In a sewing machine the helical gears 53, 54 of the loop-taker shaft 33 and bobbin case opener shaft 38 driven from the main bedshaft by a similar gear on the latter engaging the gear 53 are lubricated by providing a lubricant retaining pad 58 in an annular recess 56 of the gear 54 and making this gear of a porous material such as a sintered metal. Oil is fed when necessary into the recess 56 through a hole 59 passing through the upper part 29<SP>1</SP> of the saddle 27 supporting the shafts 33, 38. The saddle 27 is secured to the machine bed and to a bed-shaft bearing bush in a manner which allows adjustment along the bed-shaft, together with the gear on the latter, to suit different needle spacings in a twinneedle machine having separate loop-taker units of opposite hand. The opener shaft runs at half the speed of the loop-taker shaft, and the gears 54, 53 are secured on these shafts by set-screws to allow relative adjustment of the shafts.
