Class 12(3) A sewing machine has a lubricant reservoir in which an indicator such as a needle pointer or arm is pivoted and is subject to the influence of a float buoyed by the lubricant, so that the level of the lubricant can be indicated by the position of the pointer, which is visible through a transparent window or dial provided at a position above the level of the lubricant. In the overedge sewing machine shown in Fig. 1 the driving mechanisms and associated devices are lubricated by a lubricant contained in a reservoir 13, which has a removable base 14. A bracket 30 attached to a lug 31 by screws 32 has a bifurcated arm 33 carrying a pivot pin 34 on which is mounted a bell-crank lever 35. Arm 37 terminates in a pointer 38 and the free end of arm 36 is pivoted to a float member 40. A window 41 is supported in the wall of frame 10, opposite the pointer 38, by a ring 42 and is graduated so that the float-controlled pointer may indicate whether the reservoir 13 is full, halffull, or empty. The operation devices and mechanisms for stitching &c. may be similar to, or the same as, those described in Specification 691,894, [Group VII]. In the flat bed sewing machine shown in Fig. 2, a graduated window 112 is sealed within the cloth plate 52 and has two depending arms 113 carrying a pin 119 on which is pivotally mounted an L-shaped lever comprising a pointer arm 118 and an arm 117 provided with a float 120. The float rests on oil in a reservoir 105. The float is surrounded by a tubular baffle 123 formed with a slot to accommodate the arm 117, the baffle acting to shield the float against tuibulance in the oil reservoir. Oil is conveyed to the arm 54 of the machine by a splashing ring 110 on a rotating shaft 80 and by a belt 78 engaging pulleys on shafts 80 and 57. The oil is transmitted to wicking 70, 71, and 74 whereby the bearings of shaft 57 and devices in the needle head are lubricated. Co-operating with the needle is a threadcarrying looper 90 which with its associated parts may be similar to corresponding parts described in Specification 687,812, [Group VII]. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the indicator 155 is made of magnetic material and consists of a pointer arm 157 and an arm 156 placed opposite a magnet 168 which is secured to a float 169 by a rod 166 slidable through openings in a bracket 158. The float and magnet are prevented from rotational movement by a rod 170 extending through an opening 165 in the bracket.
