Abstract
750,812. Sewing-machines. WOOD, BASTOW & CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1954 [Sept. 4, 1953], No. 24460/53. Class 112. Apparatus for producing spiral stitching with a substantially constant pitch of spiral comprises a mounting 5 on which the work is rotatable by the normal sewing action of the machine, support or guide means 2 on which the mounting is movable substantially in the plane of the work so as to vary the distance between the centre of rotation and the needle, and a lead screw 8, having a progressively varying pitch, for shifting the mounting as sewing progresses so as to maintain a substantially constant pitch of spiral, the lead screw being adapted to be driven from the machine itself. The mounting 5 is slidably supported in a groove 3 provided in the member 2. The work rotates about a pin 6 carried by the mounting 5 at its end nearest the needle. The mounting is releasably coupled to the lead screw by a follower 7 in the form of a spindle, the lower end 7a of which is forked to engage the screw thread, and the upper end 17 of which is knurled, whereby the spindle may be lifted against the bias of a spring to disengage the end 7a from the lead screw. The latter is driven by reduction gearing from the pulley of the machine. A sleeve 18, containing the follower 7, passes through a slot 19 in the base of the groove 3. The upper end of sleeve 18 carries a ball race 20 secured to the mounting 5, and a ball race 21, slidably mounted on sleeve 18, is biased by a spring 22 towards the member 2.
