599,943. Sewing-machines. GROVES, W. W. (Garag). Sept. 25, 1945, No. 24833. [Class 112] Feed-bar mechanism; feed, reversing and regulating.-The feed dog 12 of a free-arm portable sewing-machine is carried by a member 9 which is pivoted at its lower end to a rocker 7 mounted on a fixed spindle 6 and which is formed with a fork 10 to engage an eccentric 15, on the shuttle shaft 5, for vertical movement; the eccentric 15 is slidable on the shaft 5, and may be shifted longitudinally clear of the fork 10, to allow the feed dog to drop clear of the work, by a fork 15a on a sliding rod 41 with a handle 42, the side of the eccentric facing the member 9 when disengaged being formed with a tapered boss to facilitate re-engagement. The member 9 carries a pin 14 connected by a link to the upper end of the pitman 17 of a second eccentric on the shaft 5, the upper end of the pitman being guided by a pin engaging a slotted block 22 which is movable on a horizontal axis, with frictional holding means, to vary the inclination of its guide slot to either side of the vertical for regulating and reversing the feed in the usual way; the block 22 is rocked by means of gear teeth on a part of its periphery engaging similar teeth on a disc 24 on a shaft 27 having a control lever 26.
