Means for regulating the pressure on the presser bar of a sewing machine comprise a lever pivoted to the sewing machine frame and pivotally movatble by means of a cam and cam follower, resilient means stressed by the lever for longitudinally urging a presser rod in a direction to relax said stress, the cam having a recess deep enough to prevent contact between the follower and cam, and means cooperating with the lever when the follower enters said recess for adjusting the spring stress. As shown, a hollow presser bar 18 houses a spring 30 which supports a slidable rod 32, the upper end of which abuts the free end 42 of a lever 44 pivoted at 52 to the machine frame. A follower 54 on lever 44 co-operates with peripheral recesses in a spiral cam 58 fast with a wheel 60 journalled in the machine frame for adjusting the force applied by spring 30 to the presser bar during normal sewing. When follower 54 enters a deep recess 64 in cam 58, an abutment 67 on lever 44 engages an adjustable screw 66 for regulating the light presser bar force required for operations such as darning, buttonholing or embroidery when the feed dog is immobilised. A slidable bracket 78, rigid with presser bar 18, is formed with a lug 76 engaged by a cam 74 for lifting the presser bar when a shaft 70 carrying cam 74 is turned by a handle 68.
