7 Claims. 01. 112-256) a puller feed mechanism that is designed for such a machine. Specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide, in this combination, for the lubrication of the puller feed mechanism and particularly for the one-way clutch of the puller feed mechanism, the construction being simple and economical, and easy toinstall on or remove from the machine.
Having in mind the above and other objects that will be evident from an understanding of this disclosure, the
invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts as illustrated in the presently preferred embodiment of the invention which is hereinafter set forth in such detail as to enable those skilled in the art readily to understand the function, operation, construction and advantages of it when read inconjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

The present invention is herein disclosed as embodied in the sewing machine forming the subject matterof my prior application Serial No. 609,836, filed September 14, 1956, to which reference may be had for a more complete understanding of the machine. 1
As illustrated in the drawings, the sewing machine includes a bed 1 from one end of which rises a'sta'ndard 2 carrying a bracket arm 3 that terminates in a head 4 overhanging the bed 1. The bed 1 includes a bottom wall 5 having a removable plate 6, Fig. 3, in the area directly beneath the standard 2. Upstanding from the bottom wall 5 are side walls including a front wall 7, a rear wall 8, a standard end wall 9 and a head end wall 10 which is spaced longitudinally of the machine from the end of the bottom wall 5. The sidewalls 7, 8, 9 and 10 together with the bottom wall 5, standard 2 and a cover plate 11 define a closed splash-lubricated compartment 12 that is divided transversely by an apertured transverse bearing wall 13. The bottom of the compartment 12 constitutes a lubricant reservoir into which lubricant is int-2tr0duced to the level indicated by the line 14, Fig. 3,

There is an opening 17 provided in the rear wall 8 of the bed 1 in the area directly below the standard 2 and behind the main shaft 16. When the machine is not provided with a puller feed mechanism, this opening 17 is closed by a plate 18 secured in an oil-tight fashion over the opening by screws 19, as illustrated in Fig. 5. When themachine is to 'be fitted with a puller feed mechanism the plate 18 is removed and there is substituted a housing 20 having an open inner side communicating with the opening 17 in the rear wall 8 of the bed 1, the housing 20 being secured over the opening 17 in an oil-tight manner by the screws 19 extending through a flange 21 formed about the periphery of the housing at the open side. A puller feed shaft 22 is arranged parallel to the main shaft 16 and is disposed at the rear of the bed. The shaft 22 extends through housing 20 and is journaled in the end walls of the housing; At the head end of the machine, the shaft 22 is journalled in spaced bearing lugs 23 provided on a bracket 24 which is secured by screws 25 to the rear .wall 8 of the bed 1. A feed roller 26 is mounted on the shaft 22'between the lugs 23.
Within the housing 20, there is mounted on the puller feed shaft 22 a one-way clutch 27 having a crank arm 28 connected by a pitman 29 extending through the opening 17 to an adjustable eccentric 30 on the main shaft 16. Thus, upon rotation of the main shaft16, intermittent oneway rotation Will be imparted to the puller feed shaft 22.
To provide for running the clutch 27 in oil, the opening 17 is made substantially rectangular and is elongated to be relatively narrow vertically, and is disposed near the top of .the bed '1 .so that the bottom edge 3-1 of the opening is disposed above the level of bottorn'32 of the housing 20. Thus, there is a portion 33 of the wall 8 immediately below the opening 17 that serves as 'a partition or dam to define a lubricant-containing well 34 in ing 17 is designed to maintain. a lubricant level in the well 34 above the bottom of the .clutch 27. During operation of the machine, lubricant is thrown into the housing'20 through the opening .17 by an oil sling 36jrnounted .on the main. shaft 16. This lubricant is accumulated in the well 34'to keep the well filled, with the excess lubricant spilling outover the bottom edge 31 of the opening 17.
A presserroller 37 holds the work. against the feed roller 26, the roller 37 being freely journaledon the end of one arm 38; of a bell crank lever 39.pivoted'at.40 to'a bracket ,41 secured to the back of the head 4 by screws 42. To bias the presser roller 37 toward the feed roller 26 there is a rod 43 seated at its lower end in a depression in aboss 44intermediate the ends of the leverarm 38 andextending at its upper end into the bore of a,hollow bushing 45 threaded into the bracket 41. A spring'46 is arranged and acts in the bore of the bushing 45 between the top of the rod 43 and the cap on the end of the bushing 45 and a second spring 47 is coiled about the rod 43 and acts between the boss 44 and the bottom of the bushing 45. The bell crank lever 39 has a second arm 48 that cooperates with a cam 49 secured to an operator actuated shaft 50 for lifting the presser roller 37.
From the above, it will be understood that the construction of the sewing machine bed is such as readily to accommodate a puller feed mechanism, and this is accomplished by simply removing the cover plate 18 and substituting the puller feed assemblyas shown in Fig. 1. In addition to providing for easy attachment to the machine, the construction and location of the opening 17, with the wall or dam33 defining the bottom of the opening at a level above the bottom cover 6, provides a lubricant-containing Well which is automatically kept filled with oil and at a level so that the bottom portion of the one-way clutch dips into the oil and is thus kept fully lubricated which is essential for no-slip long-life operation thereof. While i have shown the darn 33 as being integral with the bed it will be appreciated that the same desirable result can be obtained if the level 31 of the opening 17 were at the same level as the bottom surface 32 of the housing and a thin plate was interposed between the bed and the housing, which plate had a top surface at the level indicated by the dotted line 35. Alternatively, the dam or wall 33 could be formed integral with the housing 20 rather than integral with the bed.
Numerous alterations of the structure herein disclosed will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. However, it is to be understood that the present disclosure I relates to a preferred embodiment of my invention which is for purposes of illustration only and not to be construed as a limitation of the invention. All such modifications which do not depart from the spirit of the invention are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature and this invention, what I claim herein is:
1. In a sewing machine having a frame including a bed, a closed splash-lubricated compartment internally of said bed, a housing secured to said bed, said bed and housing having a communicating opening having a lower edge vertically above the bottom of said housing to define a well in the bottom of said housing, a first shaft extending into said housing, a main shaft iournaled longitudinally of said bed and having a portion within said compartment, an adjustable eccentric on said main shaft within said compartment, a one-way clutch on said first shaft within said housing and extending into said well, a pitman extending through said opening and operatively connecting said eccentric to said clutch, and means for moving lubricant through the opening into said well during operation of the machine.
2. In a sewing machine having a frame including a bed, a closed splash-lubricated compartment internally of said bed, a housing secured to said bed, said bed and housing having a communicating opening having a lower edge above the bottom of said housing to define a well in the bottom of the housing, a puller feed shaft extending into said housing, a main shaft journalled longitudinally of said bed and having a portion within saidcompartment, an adjustable eccentric on said main shaft with in said compartment, a one-way clutch on said puller feed. shaft within said housing and extending into said well, a pitman extending through said opening and operatively connecting said eccentric to said clutch, and means comprising an oil-sling on said main shaft for moving lubricant from said compartment through the opening into said well during operation of the machine.
3. In a sewing machine having a frame including a bed, a closed splash-lubricated compartment internally of said bed and having formed in the bottom thereof a main lubricant reservoir adapted to receive lubricant, a housing externally of and releasably secured to said bed and having a bottom surface internally thereof above the level of the lubricant in said main lubricant reservoir, said bed and housing having a communicating opening having a lower edge vertically above said bottom surface of said housing and defining a lubricant well in said housing with the lubricant level therein determined by said lower edge, a shaft extending into said housing, actuating mechanism extending through said opening and connected to said shaft within said housing for imparting actuation to said shaft, said actuating mechanism extending into said Well below the level of the lubricant therein, and means for moving lubricant from said main lubricant reservoir through said opening and into said well during the operation of the machine.
4. in a sewing machine in accordance with claim 3 in which said actuating mechanism includes a one-way clutch on said shaft, said clutch extending into said well and being partially immersed in lubricant in said well.
5. In a sewing machine in accordance with claim 3 in which said attachment mechanism is a puller feed mechanism and includes a feed roller mounted upon said shaft.
6. In a sewing machine having a frame including a bed having a side wall, a closed splash-lubricated compartment internally of said bed andhaving an opening in said side wall, the opening in the side Wall of said bed having a lower edge disposed above the bottom of said housing to form a well within the bottom portion of said housing, a main shaft journaied longitudinally of said bed and including a portion within said splash-lubricated com partment, an attachment mechanism comprising a housing secured to said bed and having an open side communicating with the opening in the side wall of the bed, a driven shaft extending into said housing, an actuating element on said driven shaft inside said housing and extending into said well, an adjustable eccentric on said main shaft, a pitman operatively connecting said adjustable eccentric to said actuating element, and means for moving lubricant through the opening into said well during the operation of the machine.
7. In a sewing machine in accordance with claim 6 in which said attachment mechanism is a puller feed mechanism and includes a feed roller mounted upon said shaft and said actuating element comprises a one-way clutch on said shaft extending into said well and being partially immersed in lubricant in said well.
