The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines, and more particularly to a sewing machine wherein the actuating parts for the needle, looper and feed are enclosed within the frame of the m which it communicates, which in turn supmachine.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type having a hollow base supporting a hollow standard with ports a hollow overhanging arm with which it communicates, wherein the main shaft is disposed in the hollow base and provided with actuating members which are adapted 15 to contact with a quantity of oil in the hollow base for splashing the same and throwing the oil on to the actuated parts for lubricating the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein said hollow base has a vertical partition for separating the feed bar and the looper from v the actuating parts in the oil reservoir.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the partition is provided with an opening of sufficient size to permit a link to connect the looper with the actuating parts within the hollow portion of the frame containing the oil, and closing said opening by a yielding member which permits the link to move back and forth and laterally as it oscillates the looper. v p
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the eccentric for moving the feed bar backand forth is located within the chamber of the hollow base containing the feed bar and is lubricated through contact with an oiling pad.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the feed dog is raised and lowered by the eccentric on the actuating-shaft, and a presser bar for supporting the presser foot is located directly above said eccentric. w

Said frame includes a hollow base having an integral hollow standard, which in turn has an integral hollow overhanging arm, wherein the base, standardand arm'all communicate, and the hollow base forms an enclosed chamher, which serves as a reservoir for the lubri-' eating oil. The looper carrier is oscillated on its support by a link which passes through an enlarged opening in the partition, so that the link can move endwise and laterally. A flexible member is provided for preventing the oil from splashing through said opening. This link is in turn actuated by a rock shaft mounted in the hollow base and the rock shaft is actuated by an eccentric strap cooperating with an eccentric on the main shaft. As themain shaft rotates, these eccentric members running in a quantity of oil will cause the splashing of the oil, and the throwing of a mist of oil up through the hollow standard and out into the hollow arm. The machine atthe rear thereof is provided with a. detachable cover plate 21. The casing is divided along thelines a, b, c and (Z, to provide a removable section. This re movable section extends clear to the needle head and covers the rear part of the needle head. When this part of the casing is removed. it exposes the needle lever and the actuating parts therefor; also the parts of the needle bar, and presser bar within the needle head.
Cooperating with the needle beneath the work support is a looper 22. The looper is mounted on a. looper carrier 23which is-pivoted at 24 to a looper support 25. The shaft carrying the looper support 25 extends through the partition 3 into the oil reservoir. The shaft isindicated at 29 in Fig. 9,. On the inner end of the shaft is an arm 30. An eccentric strap 31is connected to a ball stud 32 on this arm 30, and said eccentric strapcooperates with the eccentric 33 on the main shaft 15. This serves to oscillate the looper support, and gives to the looper a needle avoiding movement. It will be noted that these actuating parts for the shaft 29 dip into the oiland are thoroughly splashed and lubricated thereby.
The looper is oscillated for moving it into and out of the needle thread loop b means of a link 34. The link 34. extends tirough an opening 35 in the partition 3 (see Fig. 7).
At its inner end. the link is connected to a rock frame 36. Said rock frame 36 is mounted to oscillate about a vertical axis (see Fig. 6). An arm 37 of the rock frame carries a ball stud 38 to which the link is connected.
The arm 39 of the rock frame carries a ball the partition is sufliciently large to permit this lateral as well as endwise movement of the link. In order to prevent the oil from being carried through into the chamber of the hollow base wherethe looper is located,
we have provided a rubber diaphragm 43 This rubber diaiphragm has an opening therethrough which ts closely to the link' 34. The
rubber diaphragm is held by a supporting bracket 44 secured by screws to the partition.
.This bracket is of metal, and the opening from the oil reservoir, so that the oil is not sprayed on to the looper. The fabric is moved across the work support by the feed dog 45. This feed dog is carried by a feed bar 46 which is located. in the chamber with the looper 22, so, that it is free from the splashing oil in the oil reservoir. The feed bar 46 is'pivoted at 47 to a feed rocker which in turn is pivoted at 48. This feed rocker is oscillated by means of an eccentric strap 49 which cooperates with an eccentric 50 on the main 1 shaft 15. The eccentric strap is pivoted to a stud or bolt 51 whichis adjustable in a slot 52 in the feed rocker. This enables the feed stroke to be varied. The eccentric is located on the main shaft in the same chamber as the looper and the feed dog, and therefore, it is not subjected to the splashing oil in the oil reservoir. The feed rocker and the rear portion of the feed bar are covered by the removable cover plate 21. This removable cover plate carries an oiling pad 54. The oiling pad is secured to'the cover plate by means of a suitable screw 55. This oiling pad is disposed so that when saturated with oil, 1t Wlll cause oil to drip or to pass through the opening 56 in the eccentric strap cooperating with the eccentric 50. Atu'be 57 extends through the upper wall of the cover plate and leads into this oiling pad 54. By this means, oil can be readily supplied to the oiling pad 54. The cover plate is held on the supporting base by means of a cross bar 58, the ends of which are deflected downwardly so as to extend underneath ribs on the base.
The feed bar 46 is raised and lowered by means of an eccentric 59 mounted on the main shaft 15. This eccentric is located so as to engage the feed bar at the forward end thereof and substantially beneath the feed dog carried by the feed bar. The material is held on the work support and in cooperative relation. to'the feed dog by means of a presser foot 60. The presser foot 60 is carried by a presser bar 61. This presser bar 61 is mounted in a sleeve bearing 62 carried by the needle head. This sleeve bearing extends up into. the needle head and projects below the lower face thereof. The presser barterminates a short distance above the lower end of the needle head, and mounted on the upper I end of the presserbar is a bracket 63. This bracket has a rearwardly projecting arm 64 through the consequence, is set actuating shaft. in an inclined direction from front to rear which extends through a slot in the wall of the needle head so as to prevent the presser bar from oscillating in its supporting hearing. A- leaf spring bears on the bracket 63. This leaf spring is supported on a lug 66 at its rear end and an adjustable screw 67 engages the spring intermediate its ends and places the presser bar under variable spring tension. The presser bar is lifted by a hand lever 68 which is pivoted at 69 to the needle head, and is adapted to engage a stud 7 0 carried by the bracket 64 and projecting through a: slot in the front cover plate of the needle head.
Mounted on the needle bar is a thread eye 71 which extends through a slot 72 in the front wall of the needle head. Mounted on the overhanging arm is a thread guide 73 which may be adjusted; vertically. Also mounted on the overhanging arm is a thread guide 74 which may be adjusted angularly. Also mounted on the hollow standard is a threadguide 75 and tension disks 7 6. This is for the needle thread which passes through the disks and through these thread guides and then into the needle. The looper thread passes the tensions 77, thence through thread guides78 and7 9. From the thread guide 79, the looper thread passes through a groove 80 formed in the removable cover plate 81 and thence into a slot 82'beneath the cloth plate 2. After passing through the slot, the looper thread passes to a thread guide 83, thence through a thread guide 85 and thence to the looper. The thread guide 84 is carried by the link 34 and as the link moves back and forth, this thread guide will move back and forth, and thus control the looper thread. The reservoir may be supplied with oil through oil ports 86 in front of the machine, or oil ports 87 at the rear of the machine. The presser foot is provided with a finger guard 88.
It will be apparent from the above that we have provided a sewing machine wherein the actuating parts are housed within the hollow frame which is enclosed so as to provide an oil reservoir, and the splashing of the oil rotating of the eccentric parts dipping into the same, thoroughly lubricates all of the parts within the hollow frame. The needle, the looper and the feed dog are well protected from the lubricating oil by the cross partition in the hollow frame. It will further be noted that the presser bar is directly above the eccentric which raises and lowers the feed dog. This avoids strain on the operating parts. The needle bar, as a well forward of the main The needle lever extends relative to the axis of the actuating shaft, so that the eccentric strap which operates the needle lever is connected to the needle lever in a line directly above the actuating-shaft.
guide 84 to'a thread The needle lever is a straight line lever, and the manner of supporting and actuating the same, form no part of the present invention, except as to the arrangement of the lever within the hollow frame. The needle lever construction is shown, described and claimed in our Patent No. 1,737,395, granted November 26, 1929.
It willbe noted that the parts of the machine are comparatively simple in construction and arrangement, and are all positive in their actuation. This, together with the system of lubricating described, contribute to a very high speed machine.
It is obvious that minor changes in the .details of construction and the arrangement of the partslnay be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-
1. The combination with a sewing machine frame including a hollow enclosed base, a hollow standard connected to the base, a hollow overhanging arm carried by the standard and having a needle head at its outer end; of a needle bar in said head, an actuating lever mounted in said arm and standard for said needle bar, an actuating shaft extending into said hollow base, an eccentric member on said shaft, means operated by said eccentric member for vibrating said lever, said base serving as a reservoir for the lubricating oil whereby the oil is splashed thrown in the form of amist into said hollow standard and hollow arm, said means for actuating the lever supporting a splash plate adjacent the upper end of the standard.
2. The combination with a sewing machine frame including a hollow enclosed base, a hollow standard connected to the base, a hollow overhanging arm carried by the standard and having a hollow needle head at its outer end; of a needle bar in said head, an actuating lever mounted in said arm and standard for said needle bar an actuating shaft extending into said hollow base, an eccentric member on said shaft in said hollow base, means oper ated by said eccentric member for vibrating said lever, said base serving as a reservoir for the lubricating oil whereby the oil is splashed by said eccentric member and thrown in the form of a mist into said hollow standard, hollow arm and hollow head, said means for actuating the lever supporting a splash plate adjacent-the upper end of the standard, said needle head having oil pads at the lower portion thereof for lubricating the needle bar and for preventing the oil from escaping at the lower part of theneedle head.

The combination with a sewing machine frame including a hollow enclosed base, a hollow standard connected to the a hollow overhanging arm carried by the standard and having a hollow needle head at its outer end; of a needle bar in said head, an actuating lever mounted in said arm and standard for said needle bar, an actuating shaft extending into said hollowbase, an eccentric member on said shaft in said hollow base, means operated by said eccentric member for vibrating said lever, saidbase serving as a reservoir for the lubricating oil whereby the oil is splashed by said eccentric member and thrown in the form of a mist into said hollow standard, hollow arm and hollow head, said means for actuating the lever supporting a splash plate adjacent the upper end of the standard, said needle head havin oil pads at the lower portion thereof for l'iricating the needle bar and for preventin the .oil from escaping at the lower part 0? the needle head, the floor of said hollow arm being .provided with a trough inclining downward toward the standard for draining the oil back into the standard.
5. The combination with a sewing machine frame including a hollow enclosed base, a partition dividing said hollow base into an oil reservoir,'and a chamber for the looper and feed bar, a hollow standard connected to said base, a hollow overhanging arm connected to said standard and a hollow needle head carried at the outer end of said standard; of a needle bar reciprocating in said needle head, an actuating shaft extending through said hollow base, actuating means located within the base, standard and arm for reciprocating the needlebar, and for splashing. the lubricating oil contained within the oil reservoir, a looper cooperating with the needle, a looper carrier, a su port for thelooper carrier including a shaf t extending through the partition into the oil reservoir, means within the oil reserthelubricating oila looper cooperating base,
voir for operating the shaft, a link connected to the looper carrier for oscillatin the carrier, said link extending throug an opening in the wall into the'oil reservoir, and a rock frame in said oil reservoir for moving saidlink endwise for oscillating the looper carrier.
6. The combination with a sewing mabase, standard and arm forreciprocating the needle bar, and for splashing the lubrieating oil contained within the oil reservoir,
with the needle, a loopor carrier, a support for the looper carrier including a shaft extending through the partition into the oil'reservoir, means within the oil reservoir for operating the shaft, a link connected to the looper carrier for oscillating the carrier, said link extending through an opening in the wall into the oil reservoir, a rock frame in said oil reservoir for moving said link endwise for oscillating the looper carrier, a yielding diaphragm for closing the opening about the link in the partition so as to permit said link to move lat.- erally during its endwise movements, and means for supporting said diaphragm.
7. The combination with a sewing machine frame including a hollow enclosed a hollow standard connected to'the base, a hollow overhanging arm carried by the standard and having a hollow needle head at its outer end, a needle bar in said head, an actuating lever mounted in said arm and standard for said needle bar, an actuating shaft extending into said hollow base, an eccentric member on said shaft in said hollow base, means operated by said eccentric member for actuating said'lever, said base serving as a reservoir for the lubricating' oil, whereby the oil is splashed by said eccentric member and thrown in the form of a mist into said hollow standard, hollow arm, and hollow head' for lubricating the actuated parts therein, said hollow arm having the front end thereof inclined toward the hollow standard for draining. the oil accumulating in the arm and hollow needle head back into the reservoir.
