Lubricating.-A splasher 74 on the lower end of the pitman 68, connecting the lower rotary shaft 16 to the needle-bar rock-shaft 24, dips into oil in the base of the machine to create an oil mist in the chamber 19, 21 to lubricate the parts therein. Oil deposited on a ring 75 with a trough 76 is conducted into a recess 77 in the face of the crank-web 52 whence it passes through ducts in the crank and crank-pin to the bearing surface of the latter; the ring 75 also serves to prevent oil from passing through the bearing 53. Oil passing through the bearing 42 of the main-shaft 16 is conducted between ridges on the wall 18 to the bearing 41; any excess oil from the latter bearing passes to the feed mechanism, which is provided with oilimpregnated bushings. A wick 79 extending from an axial bore in the rock-shaft 24 takes oil from the mist to channels in the cranks 66, 67 and their crank-pins, and from the crank-pin of the crank 66 through channels in the link 65 to lubricate the connection of the latter to the needle-bar. The machine stands in a drip-pan 36.
