Abstract
764,127. Comminuting coal. RILEY STOKER CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1955 No. 1053/55. Class 59 Apparatus for comminuting wet raw coal comprises a hammer mill to which wet coal and hot gas are supplied, the crushed and dried coal and hot gas from the hammer mill passing to a separator from which the crushed coal and hot gas are led separately to a pulverizer which grinds the coal to a fine powder, and means to lead an alternative supply of hot gas to the pulverizer, by-passing the mill and separator. In the form shown, wet coal and heated air are supplied respectively to a hammer mill 41 by means of a hopper 52, feeder 50 and pipe 49 and by means of an air heater 15, duct 19, and pipe 53 controlled by a valve 54. The crushed coal and air passes from the hammer mill to a separator 57, the separated coal passing down through a pipe 31 to a roller-and-ring type pulverizer 21 while the separated air, with fine coal particles, passes through a pipe 61 to the inlet 34 of the pulverizer and flows upwardly so as to entrain the coal particles. The air and entrained coal passes to a classifier 36 from which the coarser particles are returned to the pulverizer while the fine particles pass through pipes 38, 11 to the burner 12 of a furnace 10. The hammer mill is provided with a pocket 47 to retain tramp metal and other hard foreign bodies thrown out by the hammers 44. A pipe 66 leads directly from the feeder 50 to the separator 57, and a flap valve 67 is pivotally mounted between the upper ends of the pipes 49 and 66. A pipe 68 controlled by a normally closed valve 69 is adapted to supply heated air to the pipe 61. When it is not desired to use the hammer mill, the valve 67 is swung to the dotted-line position shown, the valve 54 is closed and the valve 69 opened. Coal will then be supplied through the pipe 66 to the separator 57 and heated air supplied through the pipe 68 to the pipe 61. In a modification. Fig. 2 (not shown), the pulverizer is of the ball-and-ring type.
