Abstract

1,003,377. Cyclone separators. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Feb. 28, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 8496/64. Heading B2P. An apparatus for cooling and/or cleaning hot gases comprises a cooler 5 in which the gases are cooled by direct contact with a liquid and having a lower portion 11 which functions as a centrifugal dust separator, the arrangement being such that hot gases containing little or no coarse grained dust can be cooled in the upper portion of the cooler 5, whereas such gases which have been used for drying. and heating- granular material and are thus at a lower temperature and contain coarse grained dust can be cleaned in the separator portion 11. The hot gases issuing from a cement kiln I are conducted, when closing a flap 8 and opening a flap 9, through a duct 3 to the top of the cooler 5 and thence to the separator portion 11 where part of the dust is removed. Alternatively, when it is required to preheat the raw material fed to the kiln from a pulverizing mill 7, the flap 9 is closed and the flap 8 is opened so that the gases are led to the mill 7 and then, through a tangential inlet, into the separator portion 11 in which the coarse particles picked up by the gases in the mill are separated. The partially clean gases are induced by a draught fan 16 to flow from the separator portion 11 to an electrostatic precipitator 15 where the fine particles are separated, the cleaned gases being evacuated through a stack 17. The apparatus may be used for treating furnace gases drying coal in coal pulverizers.
