Abstract

672,597. Cyclone furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 29,1950 [March 16,1949], No. 23866/50. Class 51 (i). In a cyclone furnace 13 for a steam generator, hot primary air from a conduit 12 and granular fuel from a conduit 9 are fed into the furnace with a whirling motion by a burner head 11, secondary air with fines from a classifier 8 being supplied through tangential nozzles 14, giving a whirling motion in the same direction as that of the primary air and fuel. Raw coal discharged from a bunker 1 by a conveyer 2 passes in turn through a rotary feeder 3, a duct 4 supplied with controlled amounts of hot air, a beater mill 6, a duct 7 and the classifier 8, from which heavier particles are fed under control of a further rotary feeder 10 in the conduit 9 to the burner head 11. In a modification of the feeding arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), fines and secondary air from the classifier 8 may be passed into a centrifugal separator disposed over a bunker in which the fines are collected and from which they may be supplied in a controllable manner by a screw feeder to the secondary air so that on starting or with small loads the furnace may be operated exclusively or mainly with fines.
