Abstract

819,957. Tube mills. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 19, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 8796/58. Class 59 In a tube mill adapted to operate with air stream classification and with mill drying and including a mill drum containing grinding elements, the mill drum is provided at each end with an inlet for carrier air and material, e.g. fuel, to be ground and an outlet for carrier air and ground material. As shown, a rotatable mill drum 1 has its ends connected to fixed air and vapour discharge ducts 11, 12 which are connected by way of venturi nozzles 15, 16 to the riser pipes 13, 14 of classifiers 17, 18 provided with respective upper outlets 19, 20 for entrained fine fuel particles and respective lower outlets 21, 22 for the downward discharge of coarse fuel particles. The lower outlets 21, 22 are respectively connected by way of downwardly inclined ducts 23, 24 which are provided with rotary seals 27, 28 respectively, to upright down pipes 25, 26 provided with respective helical shoots 29, 30 for returning the coarse particles to the mill drum. The down pipes 25, 26 extend respectively through the walls of the vapour outlet ducts 11, 12 and are connected respectively with hot air inlet ducts 31, 32 which extend concentrically with the associated outlet ducts 11, 12. Feeders 35 to 38 are provided to supply fuel to the riser pipes 13, 14, and down pipes 25, 26. Below the classifier 18 and hot air inlet duct 32 is provided a precrusher 39 comprising a housing 40 and a beater rotor 41, the housing being connected to the outlet duct 12 by way of a casing 42 which is partitioned at 43 to provide a passage 44 for the downward flow of fuel from the feeder 36 and a passage 45 for the upward flow of entrained fine particles from the pre-crusher back to the riser pipe 14. Air is supplied at 46 to entrain fine particles from the pre-crusher while heavy material rejected by the beater rotor is removed through an outlet 49. A pre-crusher may also be provided below the classifier 17. Preferably, the internal diameter of the mill drum is greater than its length and the grinding charge. e.g. steel balls, comprises approximately 10 per cent of the drum capacity.
