761,557. Aerials. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. Aug. 11, 1954 [Aug. 12, 1953], No. 22284/53. Class 40(7) A loop aerial having dimensions negligibly small in comparison with the operating wavelengths and an axial length equal to or greater than its equivalent diameter comprises a conducting sheet formed into a nearly closed loop having four sides 10, 11, 12, 13 the.edges of the sides 11 and 12 providing coupling points for associated transmitting or receiving apparatus. Such as aerial may 'be employed in positions where one dimension must be of very small size, e.g. on the top of a mining locomotive where the clearance between it and the roof of the mine is very small, the aerial in such position co-operating inductively with a conductor secured to the mine roof and serving as a "guide" for the transmission of signals. In a particular example in which the operating frequency is 100Kc/s the aerial is formed from a piece of sheet metal 36 inches long and 12 inches wide bent to form a rectangular box (as shown) having sides 9 and 11 each of 12 inches x 12 inches and sides 12 and 13 each of 12 inches x 6 inches and a transformer 15 is provided for impedance matching between the aerial and the apparatus 16.
