Abstract
759,747. Winding yarn. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1954 [Dec. 29, 1953], No. 37561/54. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group VIII] Glass fibres 12 flowing from a tank 10 through nozzles in a bushing 11, are guided past a felt 18 fed, adjustably, with lubricant &c. from a tank 21, the resulting strand 14 being traversed at 24, 27 on to a rotating sleeve 34 loosely carried by a stationary drum 31 provided with slits 33 in its peripheral wall and supplied with compressed air through a pipe 32. The felt 18, supported by a bracket 19, is fed by hand by a knurled knob 20 from spool 16 to spool 17. A spare sleeve 67 is kept ready for donning when a completed package is doffed. The compressed air escaping through the slits 33 " floats the sleeve and its package and rotates the same to wind on the yarn. The felt 18 may be manually fed by knurled knob 20. In a modification, the sleeve 34 is supported by air jets issuing from small apertures in the stationary drum, the rotative force being furnished from air nozzles directed externally against corrugated strips attached to the sleeve. In the modification of Fig. 7, the package 58 on the sleeve 45 is rotated on the drum 46 as in the modification of Figs. 1-3, but the traverse is effected by air jets 56, 57 operating alternately. A hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 55, through a piston 54, operates a hinged arm 49 to move the package 58, upon completion, into a position for doffing. In the modification of Fig. 10, the non-rotating drums 73, 74, fed with compressed air through lines 75, 76, are attached to a pair of parallel sleeves 69 moved between pillars 71 along rods 70 by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 80, through a piston 78. While one sleeve 77 is in winding position, a spare sleeve 77 (right hand) is placed in readiness for the next wind. When that sleeve is moved to winding position, a further sleeve 77 (left hand) is placed in position. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the filaments 87 are forwarded by wheels 85 whose peripheries are slitted at 91, the package of yarn being wound on a sleeve 83 rotated by air jets on the periphery of the drum 92, traverse being effected by alternately operating jets 95.
