Abstract
615,733. Bobbins. OWENS - CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1945, No. 27424. Convention date, Feb. 14. [Class 120(iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In the production and packaging of fibres of heat softenable material, particularly glass, the material is attentuated to fibres by winding on a rotary member surrounded by a flexible sleeve, which may ultimately be collapsed for removal from the package, but which, during the winding, is subjected to an outwardly expanding force to enable it to resist the tension of the winding process. The flexible sleeve 19 of the winding device shown is supported on the outer rounded edges of blades 36, pivoted at 37 in end plates 32 having slots 34 whose leading sides 40 limit the force centrifugally applied by the blades to the sleeve as the device is rotated on its spindle 17. The sleeve may be made of gummed or latex-coated paper, or cotton or glass fibre cloth treated or coated with the material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Vinylite," or rubber coated cloth. Glass fibres, attenuated by the pull of the winding device from molten glass streams issuing from the multi-orificed. bottom of a feeder, may be gathered into a strand (a lubricant and binder being applied), and the strand fed onto the sleeve 19 by a traversing mechanism comprising an eye mounted on a slide reciprocated longitudinally by a drum-type cam. For further processing of the package, the collapsable sleeve 19 may be removed from its interior before or after transport, and the fibres may be unwound from the inside, or, if wound with a slow traverse, may be withdrawn from the end as an annulus (Fig. 4, not shown).
