712,538. Winding thread &c. BOBINGEN AKT.-GES. FUR TEXTIL-FRASER. Nov. 22, 1951 [Dec. 8. 1950], No. 27473/51. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) A winding apparatus for the high-speed winding of filament or tows comprises a spool carrier 1 supported for rotation about an axis intermediate and parallel to a pair of spool supporting spindles rotatably supported in the carrier 1 and adapted to support spools 4, 5 in alignment transversely of the axis of the carrier 1, the carrier being part rotated, e.g. by means of a motor 3 on the carrier pedestal 6, to move the empty spool 5 into winding position and the full spool 4 into doffing position, the spool spindles being driven separately, as by separate motors, through variable speed drives 2 so that the winding speed of the tow is kept substantially constant, the spools being provided with areas 10 of abrasion or grooves which grip the tow at the commencement of a wind, rotary cutting members 12, preferably driven by a means 11 connected with the spool drive, cutting the tow as it extends to the full spool in doffing position, and traversing means 7, 8 for reciprocating the tow 9 with respect to the spools. A bar or roller 9 prevents the tow leaving the guide 8 as the carrier 1 moves the spool 4 to doffing position.
