Abstract

The spinning machine of the parent Specification (wherein a thread winding or collecting device, including its driving and traversing elements, is assembled to form a compact self-contained unit which is detachably mounted on the machine) is modified by the provision of an electrically driven wind-up bobbin, the angular velocity of which is responsive to the tension of the thread travelling on the bobbin. As shown in Fig. 1 which is a side view of a portion of the spinning machine, bundles of filaments 1, each from a spinning head, after travelling over driven guide rolls 2, 3, are fed to four winding stations each contained in a housing 17 and <PICT:0885447/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0885447/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0885447/IV (a)/3> provided with a wind-up bobbin 4 (Figs. 1 and 2) which is driven by an electric motor constructed as a roller with a motor having an external rotor built therein. The bobbin 4 rotates about a non-rotatable shaft 5, one end of which is provided with a ball-bearing guide member 6 which is moveable along a fixed rod 7 and is prevented from pivoting by an arm attached to the guide member 6, the other end of the arm being provided with a small wheel moveable along the channel section guide 8. During operation, the bobbin with its growing package is urged against a roll 9 rotatably mounted on a fixed spindle by means of a spring or a weight-loaded cable acting on the guide member 6. A double thread guide 10, serving the two winding stations 14 and 15 on the bobbin 4, is reciprocated parallel with the axis of the bobbin by means of a peg 13 engaging in a groove of the cam drum 12, which is the external rotor of a second electric motor. Before reaching the thread guide the threads are led over a sensing feeler 16 (Fig. 1) which is responsive to thread tension and automatically controls the angular velocity of the bobbin in such a manner that the rate of wind up of the thread on the bobbin is constant and the tension on the thread, therefore, is also substantially constant. This automatic control may be that described in Specification 820,640. The surfaces of the thread are not damaged, as is possible in the case of thread packages driven by a friction roller, and in addition the point of initial contact of the thread on the package is always in the same straight line parallel with the bobbin axis.
