Class 80(2) Electric driving means for a spin drier, or for a washing machine embodying a spin drier comprises a plate 6 fixed on the shaft 8 of an electric motor 11 and arranged in frictional engagement with a driven plate 4 journalled at 9 by the motor shaft and connected to the shaft 1 of the drier by means of a universal joint. A friction disc 5 transmits torque between the plates 6, 4. A bar 2 secured to the disc 4 is riveted to a rubber member 3 also riveted to another bar 2 fast on the shaft 1 of the spin drier, thus forming the universal joint. When the electric motor 11 is started, the friction coupling 6, 4 slips and the speed of rotation of the spin drier progressively increases.
