Abstract
758,298. Insulators. TAYLOR, TUNNICLIFF & CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 25355/54. Class 36. An insulator 1 has its length divided by one or more external conducting parts 7 and is provided with an internal resistance which is sealed from the atmosphere, is electrically connected between end caps 5, 6 and is divided by one or more tappings connecting it to the parts 7. The internal resistance may comprise a semiconductive glaze or sputtered on metal layer 8 formed on the surface of an axial passage 3 and connected to the end caps by conductive coatings 9, 10 and blade springs 11. The tappings from the layer 8 to the parts 7 are made through transverse holes 13 and may comprise a conductive coating 14 on the walls of the holes or solid metallic members extending through the holes. The holes 13 are subsequently sealed by plugs 16 and the passage 3 filled with fluid insulant. Alternatively, a solid resistance 28 or series of resistances may extend through the passage between the end caps, tapping wires 30 extending therefrom through the holes 13 to the parts 7, or the passage 3 may be filled with a semi-conductive liquid, the tappings comprising probes extending through the holes 13 into the liquid.
